Why doesn’t KilgourMD use zinc pyrithione?Updated 2 months ago
KilgourMD chose not to formulate with zinc pyrithione (ZPT). Our Shampoo uses piroctone olamine instead.
ZPT has a long history of use in anti-dandruff products and remains permitted in the United States, where the FDA allows it in over-the-counter anti-dandruff products. In the European Union, it was reclassified and removed from cosmetic use, with the ban taking effect in March 2022, as regulators there favored available alternatives.
We formulate with global standards and long-term scalp health in mind, so we opted for piroctone olamine — a modern, barrier-supportive active that helps reduce the appearance of visible flakes while supporting scalp comfort.
